Pokémon VGC Team #2: VGC2015 Rhydon Team

Since I've been having some success with this team, I decided to post about it. The team revolves around a very interesting Pokémon known as Rhydon. I decided to use Rhydon because its arguably bulkier and stronger than its evolution Rhyperior. The team was built to help Rhydon perform its job in getting off mass amounts of damage & ultimately winning the battle.

THE TEAM AT A GLANCE

REVIEWING THE TEAM

Rhydon @ Eviolite
Ability: Lightning Rod
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Rock Slide
- Drill Run
- Ice Punch
- Protect

Rhydon is the main reason this team was built. I wanted to use Rhydon because like I said above, Rhydon is bulkier than Rhyperior thanks to Eviolite. Lightning Rod is good because I can lead it with either Charizard or Suicune so I wouldn't have to worry about any electric type moves. I went with a specially defensive Rhydon because Rhydon has a respectable physical defense stat, but a really bad specially defense stat, so I want to max that out to help it survive special hits like Scald and Giga Drain better. A Careful nature helps that out. Rock Slide is my main Rock type STAB, Drill Run for Aegislash but also bypasses Wide Guard, and Ice Punch for Dragon types like Mega Salmence and other Pokemon like Landorus-T.

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 100 HP / 200 Def / 52 SpA / 128 SpD / 28 Spe
Timid Nature
- Heat Wave
- Solar Beam
- Air Slash
- Protect

I added Charizard because in the sun, Charizard resist everything Rhydon is weak to. The only thing I have to worry about would be water type attacks, but the rest of the team can handle them. The EV Spread is designed to survive Adamant Landorus-T Rock Slide. It's a modified version of the EV Spread Yan Sym (Sogeking) used to get 5th Place at a UK Regionals. Heat Wave is my main fire type move, Solar Beam for Water types, and Air Slash to hit fighting types and Mega Venusaur.

Sylveon @ Life Orb
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 168 HP / 188 Def / 72 SpA / 52 SpD / 28 Spe
Bold Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Shadow Ball
- Psyshock
- Protect

I added Sylveon because it has good synergy with Charizard. Since Sylveon has trouble with Aegislash and Heatran, Rhydon and Charizard helps with that issue. The 168 HP/ 188 Defense allows Sylveon to survive Double-Edge from Adamant Mega Kangaskhan. I don't remember what the other numbers did. I probably just did my best to space them out in the 3 remaining stats I had left. Hyper Voice is my main Fairy stab, Shadow Ball and Psyshock for coverage, and Protect for Protection. Life Orb is for extra power.

Thundurus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Volt Absorb
Level: 50
EVs: 20 HP / 252 SpA / 236 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast
- Grass Knot

Thundurus-T was added to help with my matchup against water types. Thundurus-I was an option, but I didn't feel it would best help the team. I went with a Choice Scarf to help Thundurus gain some extra speed that it already lacks, only holding a base 101 speed stat. The 20 HP lets Thundurus-T survives Jolly Tyranitar's Rock Slide and Sylveon's Choice Specs boosted Hyper Voice. The Sp. Attack investment helps Thundurus improve its power with the speed as a remainder. Thunderbolt is my stab move, Hidden Power [Ice] for Landorus-T and opposing Thundurus, Focus Blast for opposing steel types, and Grass Knot for Mega Swampert and Gastrodon.

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 232 HP / 84 Def / 112 SpA / 80 SpD
Bold Nature
- Tailwind
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Protect

I added Suicune because I needed Tailwind support to help out my team. The team had a terrible speed stat overall and Tailwind fixes this. The EV Spread KO's Landorus-T with Ice Beam. It also survives Thunderbolt from Thundurus. Leftovers helps Suicune's survival. Scald is my main stab move.

Cobalion @ Assault Vest
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Iron Head
- Zen Headbutt
- Stone Edge

Cobalion is my final Pokemon. I added him to improve my Mega Kangaskhan matchup with Close Combat. Cobalion also does well with handling Fairy types with Iron Head. I added Zen Headbutt and Stone Edge because it has good coverage for Fighting types as well as Flying types. I went with a simple spread because I felt I didn't need a fancy, complicated EV Spread to make him work well. Assault Vest is because I have 4 attacks and the Assault Vest would help.

That's the team. Thanks for reading. I really enjoy this team. I can't wait using it and I hope you enjoyed reading it.

Pokémon VGC Team #1: VGC2015 Mega Blastoise Team

I decided to post about my first VGC team I plan to use in the VGC 2016 metagame. The team was built around Mega Blastoise because Mega Blastoise is a very bulky Mega Evolution. At 79 HP, 120 Defense, & 115 Sp. Defense, it will be taking multiple hits & staying on the battlefield for a very long time. The team was built to support Mega Blastoise, taking out its threats, and helping it achieve victory.

THE TEAM AT A GLANCE

THE FULL TEAM REVIEW
Blastoise-Mega @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Mega Launcher
Level: 50
EVs: 100 HP / 72 Def / 252 SpA / 84 SpD
Modest Nature
- Water Pulse
- Aura Sphere
- Ice Beam
- Protect

The Mega Evolution of the team. Like I said above, its defenses mean that Mega Blastoise is a very bulky Pokémon, but also doesn't slouch in the offenses department. With 135 in Sp. Attack, Mega Blastoise will be hitting very hard. The defenses allow Mega Blastoise to take 86.8% at most from Modest, max Sp. Attack Thundurus. It also takes Double-Edge from Mega Kangaskhan as a 2HKO. Hyper Voice from Sylveon is a 3HKO. The moveset is relatively simple. Water Pulse is my water stab move. The reason I'm not using Water Spout is since Water Spout loses power the less HP you have, I find it to much of a liability & most likely won't go as well as planned.

Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
Level: 50
EVs: 84 HP / 252 Atk / 68 Def / 104 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch
- Knock Off
- Mach Punch

Conkeldurr was added because a Pokemon may try to to burn my Blastoise, so I would switch into Conkeldurr and benefit from it thanks to Guts. The EV Spread survives Double-Edge from Mega Kangaskhan, OHKO's Landorus-T with Ice Punch, or Ice Punch + Mach Punch at -1, and survives Hyper Voice Mega Salamence Conkeldurr honestly works really well since it handles normal types, removes items with Knock Off, and can remove Focus Sashes with Mach Punch.

Cresselia @ Mental Herb
Ability: Levitate
Level: 50
EVs: 220 HP / 36 Def / 156 SpA / 96 SpD
Calm Nature
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Calm Mind
- Helping Hand

Cresselia was added because I struggled with Mega Venusaur and this was the best answer I could find. The EV Spread is from Aaron Zheng's (Cybertron) 2013 Worlds Spread which he used in a Trick Room team to get 3rd. The EV Spread minimizes Sandstorm damage. It also OHKO's 4 HP/ 0 Sp. Defense Landorus-T with Ice Beam. I'm using Mental Herb because Taunt is annoying and this helps.

Heatran @ Chople Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe
Modest Nature
- Heat Wave
- Flash Cannon
- Protect
- Earth Power

I added Heatran becuase I still needed a fire type and I also wanted a steel type to handle opposing Fairy types like Sylveon & Togekiss. I went with a Chople Berry because I wanted to take a Close Combat from Terrakion & I tried the Shuca Berry, but I wasn't taking Landorus-T's Earthquake with the Shuca Berry so I tried Chople Berry & it worked perfectly. With 204 Speed, Heatran outspeeds base 70 speed Pokémon like Breloom & Bisharp. Max Sp. Attack is to get the most out of Heatran's Sp. Attack & Modest Nature helps that out, & 56 HP was leftover. Heat Wave is my main fire stab, Flash Cannon for Fairy types,  and Earth Power for opposing Heatran.

Zapdos @ Expert Belt
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 196 HP / 104 Def / 52 SpA / 4 SpD / 96 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 30 Spe
- Thunderbolt
- Roost
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Tailwind

I added Zapdos for Tailwind support. The Tailwind support helps the overall team because in the right situation, I can get off relatively safe Tailwind with very little worry. The EV Spread survives Double-Edge from Mega Kangaskhan, makes Rock Slide from Landorus-T a 3HKO, OHKO's 4 HP/ 0 Sp. Defense Landorus-T with Hidden Power [Ice], and makes Double-Edge from Mega Salamence a 3HKO. Roost is for recovering HP, which the defense allows Zapdos to do.

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Atk / 52 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Ferrothorn is the most recent member of the team. I added him because I was having some trouble with bulky water types like Suicune and Milotic. Ferrothorn works really well for 3 main reasons.

 1) It does really well with bulky water Pokémon.
 2) It works really well in rain.
 3) It can combat Fairy types like Sylveon, Mega Gardevoir, Togekiss, and Azumarill in combination with Heatran.
The combination of Flash Cannon and Gyro Ball can destroy some major Fairy types. It also does really well since I can switch Mega Blastoise into Ferrothorn to take a Thunder Wave and gain a boost in Gyro Ball's power.

This is the team. Thanks for reading. I plan on using this team early into the season. Bye.
