VGC '16 Team/Core Showcase #4: Kyogre and Dialga

, , No Comments
I thought that it's about time to cover another core that has had success in the metagame to help give a better understanding of it and to possibly give you some ideas if you want to use it. Today, we'll be covering Dialga and Primal Kyogre. A up and coming core, it's gaining popularity and it's about time to talk about it.

The Core we'll be covering today

Why is this core being used?
  • A popular new version of the Rain/Steel version (The older version was Politoed and a steel type for the team)
  • Has a strong Trick Room mode that a team can greatly benefit from
  • Can handle RayOgre, which is always amazing to accomplish as Dialga walls the standard Rayquaza and Kyogre sets
Now, I want to go into some sample sets for this. I will be using the sets from a NuggetBridge user by the name of Flamingoaxis, who used this Kyogre and Dialga to get 7th Place at the Duluth, Minnesota Midseason Showdown. I'll link the team report down below in case you want to read it.

His team to help out: gourgeist kyogre-primal mawile-mega dialga thundurus umbreon

Kyogre @ Blue Orb
Ability: Drizzle
Level: 50
EVs: 84 HP / 172 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Water Spout
- Ice Beam
- Scald
- Protect
11/15 Games
I went with Primal-Kyogre since it helps both Mawile and Gourgeist against Primal-Groudon. I chose Water Spout as I felt with Trick Room up I could easily get full powered ones off, and Scald as my next water attack since it will always hit, and the burn chance is pretty nifty. Ice Beam was obviously used for Mence and Ray and in case Desolate Land was up. The spread is an old one that allows me to take a Jolly Life Orb Mega-Ray Dragon Ascent and still have max special attack, which allows Water Spout to do some ridiculous damage.

Dialga @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Pressure
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 60 Def / 52 SpA / 140 SpD / 4 Spe
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Dragon Pulse
- Flash Cannon
- Flamethrower
- Trick Room
9/15 Games
I decided to use Dialga as my second Trick Room user after it had seen some success at regionals and can easily shut down the RayOgre teams. The moves are pretty standard by now except for Flash Cannon, with Flamethrower actually being my only way to hit Ferrothorns for supereffective damage. I used Flash Cannon over Protect as it would allow me to hit fairies, especially supportive ones like Clefairy and Togekiss, and if I had the rain up. The EV's let me take a +2 Xerneas Moonblast on the special side, and an Adamant Precipice Blades from Primal-Groudon on the physical side. The rest was just dumped into special attack. Sitrus Berry was used just to increase my bulk and help with taking multiple moves to get Trick Room up.

Possible Members to add to this core
  1. mawile-megasalamence-mega landorus-therian- Both have Intimidate to help support the team so Dialga can set up Trick Room and Kyogre can use high powered Water Spout.
  2. kangaskhan-mega - Has Fake Out to help Dialga set up Trick Room
  3. amoonguss - Redirection to help Dialga set up Trick Room
  4. thundurus - Speed control if Trick Room doesn't go as planned
  5. ferrothorn - Since a check to Xerneas and P-Kyogre is almost a big thing, then Ferrothorn can fit this role perfectly
A great resource to help figure out what to add:

Proof of how strong this core is
  1. Chandra got 2nd at the Stockholm Regional
  2. Daryl Sprenger got 4th at the Innsbruck Regional
  3. Alex Underhill got 6th at the Collinsville Regional
  4. Conan Thompson got 6th at the Oregon Regional
  5. Emilio Estrada got 7th at the Oregon Regional
  6. Wolfe Glick got 1st at the Florida Regional

 How to beat this core
  1. groudon-primal - With Gravity up and under Trick Room, Groudon can easily 2HKO most Kyogre and potentially OHKO Dialga with Precipice Blades and if under Sun, Kyogre can only 3HKO Groudon with Ice Beam.
  2. A lack of Trick Room can make dealing with enemy teams a lot harder
I hoped you enjoyed this. If you have any suggestions on what you want to see, let me know in the comment section below. Check out my older content and I'll see you next time. Bye.
