VGC '16 Pokemon Spotlight #9: Palkia

, , No Comments
Hey. Today, I'll be covering the 2nd Pokémon in the Sinnoh Trio: Palkia. I plan on covering Giratina very soon. Palkia is a very strong Pokémon. It's also part of the Creation Trio and controls space. Let's start by going into it's base stats to see what it's about

90 HP                    150 Sp. Attack
120 Attack            120 Sp. Defense
100 Defense          100 Speed

Palkia has some respectable base stats for a legendary. 90/100/120 is pretty bulky and with a great typing I'll go into later, expect Palkia to be taking some hits. 100 Speed isn't as impressive since you speed tie with threats like Mega Kangaskhan and Salamence before it Mega Evolves. The 120 Attack won't be touched so it's nothing to worry about, but it is usable if you want to. That 150 Sp. Attack is what you want to use as Palkia's massive Special Attacking movepool allows it to get the coverage it needs to do well.

TYPING: Water/ Dragon
1x: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dark
2x: Dragon, Fairy
.5x: Steel
.25x: Fire, Water

Pressure: Palkia's standard ability. When Pressure activates, the amount of PP that it will cost to use a move, Pressure makes it so that it takes away an extra PP point. It can be a helpful ability for during stall situations when the timer is counting down and helps quickly close down the PP count when a move is about to run out that your worried about.

Telepathy: Telepathy is Palkia's hidden ability that was given out during a Japanese event where players could receive all of Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina with their hidden ability. The problem with Palkia is that unless you want to use a fast Palkia, this isn't the event for you as they were all natured locked and Palkia got the short end of the stick with Timid.

Now, let's see what moves are the best for Palkia.
  1. Earth Power
  2. Aura Sphere
  3. Spacial Rend
  4. Hydro Pump
  5. Ice Beam
  6. Thunderbolt
  7. Flamethrower
  8. Protect
  9. Trick Room
  10. Gravity
Palkia has some nice coverage with it's move. Earth Power is good for hitting Primal Groudon while you can use Aura Sphere for Kangaskhan. Spacial Rend is recommended over Draco Meteor because while Spacial Rend is weaker, it doesn't have any drawbacks unlike Draco Meteor that drops your Sp. Attack stat. Hydro Pump is water stab if you feel like you'll be able to Primal Groudon out of the Harsh Sun. Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and Flamethrower are just coverage moves. Trick Room is the main reason while the Timid Telepathy Palkia isn't a good idea. Gravity offers supportive options to pair it with Primal Groudon so it can spam Precipice Blades without worrying about the shaky 85% accuracy. Now, I wanna go into some items to consider using.
  1. Haban Berry
  2. Lum Berry
  3. Life Orb
  4. Choice Specs
  5. Lustrous Orb
  6. Roseli Berry
Haban Berry is the berry that halves the damage done by any super effective Dragon move. This is helpful as Palkia can take a strong Dragon move from something like Mega Salamence and then go for a move to do major damage right back. Lum Berry is mainly to protect against Dark Void Smeargle. Life Orb is to get extra damage. Choice Specs so you can get some serious extra damage. Lustrous Orb is the special item that only Palkia can use so it can get some extra power out of it's Dragon and Water moves. Roseli Berry is the berry that halves the damage dome by super effective Fairy moves. This can be cool so you can take less from a Fairy move then get some damage off before fainting. Now, I wanna go into some sample sets.

Some Partners to use with Palkia
  1. kyogre-primal - Palkia can use Gravity to help Kyogre land 100% accurate Origin Pulse and Thunder. It can also use Trick Room to help Kyogre move first to get off major damage before it faints.
  2. groudon-primal - Palkia and Primal Groudon form a nice core both defensive and offensive synergy. Like Kyogre, Trick Room, Groudon benefits from Trick Room to do well.
  3. ferrothorn - Palkia and Ferrothorn form a defensive core that only doesn't cover Fighting, Dark and Ground types. Also, Ferrothorn can use Gyro Ball to handle Xerneas, which Palkia will enjoy.
  4. kangaskhan-mega - Kangaskhan can use Fake Out to help Palkia set up Trick Room. Also Palkia can hit on the special side while Palkia will hit on the physical side as well as handle some of threats Palkia doesn't like
How to beat Palkia
  1. xerneas - Xerneas' Fairy moves will totally annihilate Palkia with little to no worry.
  2. salamence-mega - If Palkia isn't holding the Haban Berry, Mega Salamence can use Draco Meteor to OHKO Palkia with ease.
  3. ho-oh - If Palkia isn't carrying a super effective move, then Palkia will have a tough time cracking through Ho-Oh's amazing special defense stat.
  4. kangaskhan-mega - Like it can be a great partner for Palkia, Mega Kangaskhan can be a dangerous Pokemon to face if Palkia isn't prepared.
I hoped you enjoyed this analysis. If you haven't, checked out my older content and stay tuned for a report talking about my experiences at the IL Midseason Showdown on 3-12-2016. It's a Best of 3 tournament and I'm really excited to go and share my experiences with you guys. Bye.
