A Taticial Fusion of Fire and Water: 17th Place MidSeason Showdown Report

, , No Comments
I decided to write a team report of the team I brought to a Midseason Showdown recently. The tournament was all BO3 so if I made it to Top Cut, I would be exhausted. The problem is that the way my schedule worked is that it was a 2 day event and I could only stay for Saturday so if I made Top 8, I wouldn't be able to stay for Sunday so I would have to forfeit my Top 8 match. Luckily, I didn't have to deal with that, so that's a relief.

Going into this event, I wasn't sure if I wanted to use RayOgre or Double Primal as they both seemed like the right thing to use. At first I built a RayOgre team that I liked.

  raichu scizor crobat landorus-therian
I was all set  to use this team, but the problem was that it didn't seem to work well together, which meant I went with my 2nd idea of using Double Primal. So I'll get into how I got my team.

I started off with the classic Double Primal core. It was working well so I just decided to stick with it.

I went on Twitter to ask for some help. One of my friends, Brian, gave me the idea to use Salamence and Cresselia, which I tried and really liked, so I made them permanent members to the team.

   cresselia  (talonflame amoonguss)
After having those 4, I decided to randomly add Talonflame and Amoonguss as just random members to the team, but with try only bring the first 4 and only bring the last 2 if I really need to so I can exchange them if needed.

   cresselia ferrothorn crobat
Once again, I went back to Twitter to ask for some help. Luckily, I was given assistance by my other friend, Quinn, who suggested Ferrothorn to improve my Xerneas matchup. I then asked whether or not Crobat would be a good idea. This is the final member of the team.

Alright. Let's go into my 6 rounds to show off how I played. I have all but 1 battle code, so I'll add those codes in.

Round 1: vs. Nate Engstrom
Team:  groudon-primalxerneasliepardsalamence-megasmearglekangaskhan-mega

Game 1 Code: XLSG - WWWW - WW3C - HMXR
What he brought:
What I brought: crobat

In Game 1, I played the Xerneas setting up very badly. After he set-up Geomancy with Xerneas, there wasn't much I could do, so I went into Game 2 and decided to cover the Xerneas match-up more effectively.

Game 2 Code: K6XG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7HK7
What he brought:
What I brought:   ferrothorn

In Game 2, I felt I adjusted a lot better. The Groudon and Ferrothorn put in a lot work to where when they wen't down, I was in a position to finish the game with Salamence and Kyogre

Game 3: Code:  R7TW - WWWW - WW3Z - 7HNK
What he brought:
What I brought:       ferrothorn

I feel like the idea of Groudon was going to work. Salamence didn't feel like it was the right lead for providing offensive pressure, so I switched in Ferrothorn. Throughtout the match, Nate was talking about some sort of "show-stopper", so I was confused. He brings in Smeargle and Transform into his Xerneas that set-up a Geomancy and kinda scared me, but Groudon finished up.

Win: 2-1
Record: 1-0

Round 2: vs. Stephen Morioka
Team kyogre-primalrayquaza-megaaegislashthundurus600px-169Crobatgengar-mega

Game 1 Code: 7UVG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7HRA
What he brought:
What I brought:   ferrothorn

I had a really bad match-up against his team and wasn't able to get out of it. Thundurus paralyzed my Salamence and proved to be annoying

Game 2 Code: 6Q6W - WWWW - WW3Z - 7YXV
What he brought:
What I brought:

Game 2 played the same as Game 1.

LOSS: 0-2
Record: 1-1

Round 3 vs. Gaylen Zeller
Team: kyogre-primalrayquaza-megaaegislashraichusmearglearcanine

Game 1 Code: T9UG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7Y65
What she brought:
What I brought:

After Salamence went down, Groudon proved to be to much for her to handle.

Game 2 Code: AKZG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7YAY

What she brought:
What I brought:

Kyogre was aided by Crobat's Tailwind and the r est was history.

WIN: 2-0
Record: 2-1

LUNCH BREAK! Got some delicious pizza and talked about Pokemon with Nate Engstrom and Nick Sefrenak. That was fun.

Round 4; vs. Mario Serrano
(Game 1 is lost in time as I don't have the battle code, but I did end up losing that match)

Game 2 Code: GQMG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7YDC
What he brought:
What I brought:   cresselia

The first time I brought Cresselia to a match. This was the best I played all day so it was a shame I lost

LOSS 0-2
Record: 2-2

Round 5: vs. Joseph Kang
Team:  kyogre-primalgroudon-primalsalamence-megamawile-megasmearglebronzong

Game 1 Code: W8AG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7YYG
What he brought:
What I brought:

I wished I watch more of Road to Ranked as I got tripped up with his team.

Game 2 Code: C2JG - WWWW - WW3Z - 7YZC
What he brought:
What I brought:  cresselia

Like Game 1, not watching enough Road to Ranked and got tripped up.

LOSS: 0-2
Record: 2-3

Round 6: vs. Cameron Wickersheim
Team: golemgengarscizorlopunny-megagoodrasigilyph

Game 1 Code: (I won't be including this code as it was a very relaxed match. I'll just go over what happened. Will also delete the first 2 codes, so down below, I will explain what happened.)

Turn 1: Mega Salamence and Primal Groudon vs. Gengar and Golem (Leads)
Turn 2: Salamence used Hyper Voice to OHKO Gengar with a Crit. Groudon used Precipice Blades to finish off Golem. He sends in Mega Lopunny and Scizor
Turn 3: Lopunny used Fake Out on Groudon. Scizor used Bullet Punch on Salamence. Salamence used Hyper Voice to KO Lopunny and do 40% to Scizor
Turn 4: Salamence used Draco Meteor onto Scizor and KO's it

4-0 WIN

What he brought:
What I brought:       cresselia

Before the match started, he did say that he wasn't expecting to see the Restricted Pokemon during his matches, so I wasn't sure what to expect until I saw his team and the Sigilyph didn't hold an item.

Game 2 Code: (I won't be including this code as it was a very relaxed match. I'll just go over what happened. Will also delete the first 2 codes, so down below, I will explain what happened.)

Turn 1: Mega Salamence and Primal Groudon vs. Golem and Goodra (Leads)
Turn 2: Salamence used Draco Meteor on Goodra and OHKO's it. Groudon used Precipice Blades on Golem and brings it down to Sturdy. Golem used Smack Down on Salamence.
Turn 3: Salamence used Hyper Voice and KO's Gengar. Gengar used Confuse Ray on Groudon. Groudon used Precipice Blades, but fails.
Turn 4:  Scizor used Bullet Punch on Salamence. Salamence used Hyper Voice. Gengar used Shadow Ball on Groudon. Groudon hits itself in confusion
Turn 5: Salamence used Hyper Voice onto Gengar and Scizor, which KO's both.

What he brought:
What I brought:    cresselia

Game 2 played the same as Game 1, as I was able to overwhelm him.

WIN: 2-0
Final Record: 3-3 17th out of 41st

After my Round 6, I watched the stream and waited for the results as the rest of the matches concluded. When the final results were released, I was hoping for Top 16 as the 9-16 ranked players got 54 CP. I looked and realized I got 17th place out of the 41 people (The 38th player got DQ'ed as one of his Pokemon was caught under the electronic hack check and #39-41 I assumed dropped out). I bubbled and got no CP as my resistance was pretty bad. I was the 4th 3-3 rated player. Overall, I thought I played pretty well today, but this tournament being BO3 allowed me to play better and have certainly took that knowledge to do well in future events

  • The Judges for hosting this event nicely
  • Nate Engstrom and Nick Sefrenak for hanging out with me during the event
  • Rebecca Cartwright for hosting this event and giving me a 6 IV breeding Ditto.

  • Stephen Morioka and Mario Serrano for earning their Day 1 Worlds Invite.

I might be going to the Wisconsin event as it's happening during my Spring Break. If I do, I hope to do well to post my warstory from that event.
