McDonald's and Struggles: Top 4 Premier Challenge Team Report

I attended a Premier Challenge on September 25, 2016 and finished in the Top 4, which I'm proud of that, so I want to write a small team report on what happened. This was my first Premier Challenge of the season, so doing this well so far was a huge confidence booster going into the rest of the season. The event was Best of 1 Swiss, which I'm not the biggest fan of, but I understood it was based on timing, so I just was okay with it with Best of 3 in Top Cut. I won't reveal my EV Spreads as I still plan on using them, so I hope you enjoy this.

------------------------------------------------

Round 1: vs. Nate Engstrom (1-0)
His Team:
2-0 WIN
This battle could have easily been some Nate could've taken. The reason is that there was a glare at the library and it resulted in Nate misclicking with Cresselia and he clicked Thunder Wave on my Groudon by accident. If he made the right idea and went for Icy Wind, he would've guaranteed the win.

Round 2: vs Mario Serrano @Mario_CsRock (1-1)
His Team:
0-3 LOSS
I felt that this wasn't my best play. Turn 1, he went for Super Fang + Shadow Ball on my Bronzong to pick up the KO. He then set up Tailwind with a Crobat and on the last turn of Tailwind, if Groudon got the 2nd Protect alongside Kyogre's first Protect, then I would've been in a better position, but I couldn't get the double and got blown back.

Round 3: vs Abraham Marquez (2-1)
His Team:
2-0 WIN
RED CARD RAYQUAZA! My opponent had a Red Card Rayquaza, It was pretty cool to see, but I just had to play smart and when the Red Card activated, I was scared if he would predict who came in to punish it, but he didn't and I wrapped it up in a nice, neat bow.

Round 4: vs Adam Mugaini (3-1)
His Team:
3-0 WIN
A standard Big B Team. I'm glad that he didn't bring his Smeargle, but it got close as after I knocked out his Xerneas, his Kangaskhan took out my Thundurus, and on the final turn, he decided to set up Swords Dance with his Groudon and if I didn't knock it out, he would have a +2 Primal Groudon and a Bronzong under Trick Room, so I would've guaranteed lost, but I knocked it out and he had only his Bronzong under his Trick Room, which was cool.

Round 5: vs Alyssa Smith (3-2)
Her Team:
0-2 LOSS
Don't want to talk to much about this match. I lead terribly and her Salamence/Dialga lead really handled me. I went for Water Spout to knock them out, but Kyogre and Amoonguss in the back really sealed my fate as a loss. Congrats to Alyssa for making Top Cut at the first PC of the season as a first-year Master.

I went 3-2 overall in Swiss and I was really hoping that my resistance was just strong enough to make Top Cut. It helped that my final opponent went 4-1 in Swiss and 4/6 of the players that went x-2 would make Top Cut, which only helped my confidence. I then decided to just go up and ask after my friend, Brad Warnecke asked if he made cut, which he did. I asked and I did make Cut at the 7th Seed, so I my resistance was just strong enough. Time to talk about my Top 8 match against the 2md seed, Dylan Salvanera, who was a first year Master, and he was a really strong player as he finished 3rd in CP after 2016 Nationals, so I was in for a tough, but fun match.

Top 8: vs Dylan Salvanera @DullAce24VGC
His Team:
G1: 4-0 WIN
G2: 0-3 LOSS
G3: 1-0 WIN
Going into this match, I remember playing something very similar this earlier in an online tournament 3 times, but the Mawile was a Thundurus. Game 1, I lead Thundurus + Groudon and it really helped as I was able to win 4-0 which included living some moves from my Groudon. Game 2, I can't remember what he lead, but it was able to clean me up and lost 0-3. Game 3, I decided to bring Ferrothorn for the first time all day and it helped out. I got a critical hit, Double-Edge onto his Kyogre, which really swung the match into my favor and it got down to his low HP Groudon vs. my  reasonably health Kyogre, to which I went for Scald and it was over pretty quickly.

Top 4: vs Alex Underhill @LexiconVGC
His Team:
At this point, we had to go to the McDonald's down the street as the library was going to close at 5, but if we started Top 4, we wouldn't finish in time and someone could technically get some advice on the car-ride there in the middle of the set. When we got to the McDonald's, I left my 3DS back at the library, but I couldn't run and get it, then play my match against Alex as my mom wanted to head back home at 4:40, so I had to forfeit my match and finished in the Top 4.

Hoped you enjoyed this. Shoutout to Rebecca Cartwright for hosting, everyone I played or would've played, and to Brad Warnecke for winning the Premier Challenge in the end. Thanks for reading this and I hope to see you next time Bye!
